At half time of the Police/Fire game, the DFC invited Fire Fighters and all first responders to join the Nierstedt family at half court. An estimated 125 responded, in plain clothes and in uniform. The Armory was surrounded with fire rigs carrying concerned brothers of Matt Nierstedt.
DFC Trustee Ed Finn invited Bob Lauterhahn, chairman of the Board of Trustees, to present a check for $5,000.00 to Charlie & Pat Nierstedt, Matt’s parents. After a short, heartfelt speech by Pat, the check was passed on to Jersey City Fire Chief Steven McGill to be given to the Jersey City Fire Fighters Distress Fund in Matt’s name. After a brief thank you, the microphone was passed along to Bob Kilduff who presented the family with a trophy/plaque containing Matt’s Badge number and the Ax symbolic of being a firefighter.
A moment of silence was observed in honor of Matt, all first responders, veterans and Jersey City Police Lieutenant Christopher Robiteau who died in uniform on the New Jersey Turnpike shortly over a week prior.
